Yeah, so…I’m back. It’s been a while! So much of a while that I decided to make an entirely fresh start. You might remember the years-long book blog, though I think I stopped around 2015 or 2016? Since then, I haven’t blogged much. But I’m determined to be back.
Why, you ask, am I back after all this time? Well, I have a lot going on! I figured this post might be good for a rundown of happenings this year.
Soooo the elephant in the room is the pandemic. Like lots of people, I spent MONTHS sitting at home. I was going crazy! The main thing I’ve learned about myself through all of this is that I desperately need to be busy. I was so grateful to be able to go back to work – even though I’m only in the office for half a day. I need the structure! My main library work task at the moment is to make a weekly video series, SML Art Club, which you can find on the library’s Youtube page.
Speaking of work, when I was called back for training sometime in May, I think I only had one mask because I hadn’t gone anywhere. We’d been ordering groceries for curbside delivery. The library is requiring all employees (and patrons!) to wear masks, so I needed several of them quickly. Luckily, Palmer knows how to sew, and he made me a few.
Turns out, though, that Palmer finds sewing terribly frustrating. I needed more masks, and I wanted masks to give to others, so I figured that it was a good time to pull out the sewing machine my dad gave me YEARS ago and learn how to use it.
I made several masks for myself and some for others, and then I branched out into clothing. I guess I need to be better about taking pictures of myself because I don’t have any of what I made! It was mostly skirts and a few knit shirts. And LOTS of pajama pants and shorts.
Anyway, at some point I realized that I really like making masks, so I decided to make more and open an Etsy shop! I named it Just Wear a Mask and started selling. So far, it’s gone really well – but this isn’t supposed to be a post about the mask shop. It’s about the return of the blog!
I promise I won’t only talk about masks here, though that’ll definitely be part of it.
I’ve spent most of my time working on selling masks and all that entails – which, I guess, is why I’m back here. My Big Goal for September is to Conquer Social Media. If you know me, you probably know I’m not a huge fan of social media, and I’m generally not as active on it as most people. Well, that needs to change because I have TWO brands I want to promote: Oh wait…I forgot and Just Wear a Mask.
While I enjoy making and selling masks, I look forward to not having to wear them anymore. Hopefully, at some point, this pandemic will go away, and that will mean that JWAM sales will dry up. My goal at that point is to pivot back to Oh Wait…I forgot and sell the art I’ve been meaning to sell for YEARS, whether it be on Etsy or on this website.
So! Plans! I have them. Look for fairly frequent posts here and a LOT more on Instagram and Facebook. And Pinterest because evidently I need to be active there, too. I’ll leave you with an excellent timelapse Palmer made when Hurricane Laura blew through Shreveport last weekend.
